The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention Album Lyrics

The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention Lyrics

The Same

We don't need to fight
Look towards the light
Grabbing it with both hands
What you know is right

Somebody is falling down
Somebody is telling lies
Simple ass motherf*ckers
One mistake after another

People in the streets
Please
People in the streets
Somebody is hearing voices
Somebody is going down, down, down
Going down, going down, going down

People in the streets
Please
We are one, the same, please
We are all the same, please
We are all the same, please

We are all the same
We are one, the same
We are one, the same

The Opposite

What will now become of us? (What will now become of us?)
The straw is coming out of us (straw is coming out of us)
It goes back and forth followed by a question mark
Lit up like a firework (lit up like a firework)

Can we have a next contestant please?
In this logical absurdity (logical absurdity)
I'm quitting unexpectedly (quitting unexpectedly)
Opposites attract (opposites attract)
The ashen dozen, pockets full of emptiness

He doesn't mean anything
He doesn't mean anything
He doesn't mean anything
He doesn't mean anything
Anything at all

Objects coming near us (objects coming near us)
Sometimes can appear too close (appear too close)
It goes back and forth, followed by a question mark
Opposites attract (opposites can work it out)
Lit up like a firework (lit up like a firework)
Elected billionaires (happens to the best of us)

You Will Never Work in Television Again

Fear not my love, he's a fat f*cking mist
Young bones spit out, girls slitting their wrists
Curtain calling for the kiss from the nursery rhyme
Behind some rocks, underneath some bridge
Some gangster troll promising the Moon

Yeah right
Sleep tight
All night

Some kid, in golden chains, two slippery ropes
A lonely stitch, left to be unpicked
'Cluding my left foot
Let the lights down low, bunga bunga or you'll
Never work in television again
Yeah right

He chews 'em up, he spits 'em out
It's whatshisname, the genie man
Mechanical, mechanical
All those beautiful young hopes and dreams
Devoured by those evil eyes and those piggy limbs
You sad f*ck, you throw small change
Take your dirty hands off my love

Heaven knows where else you've been
Heaven knows where else you've been
Heaven knows where else you've been
Heaven knows where else you've been
Heaven knows where else you've been

Pana-vision

My eyes are open wide
And now I see you
Without your robes on
Without your crown

I don't want to hate you
I don't want to bear
A kind of fascination
Gets in my way

The door that opens wide
My high up altar
Oh Heaven, help me
Is that the time?
Beginning, without end
Never lost, never die
Unending, a beam of light
A tunnel, in my mind

As it opens wide
With a filter on the lens
She sees everything I do
She sees everything I do

I'm without my shoes on
Over broken glass
I am dancing for pennies
I am staring straight ahead

A view that is so wide
It's gonna break
It's like it holds me in its gaze
If I go, it's because
It's happened once before
And now it's starting all again

As it opens wide
Forget everything you knew
Forget everything you knew
As it opens wide

Like a new born child
Like a new born child
Like a new born child
Like a child
Like a child
Like a child
Like a child
Like a child

The Smoke

Easy, easy
It begs me while I'm sleeping
A desire, second chance
I have set myself on fire

It's easy
Don't mess with me
Don't mess with me
As I die in the flames
As I set myself on fire

Uh

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
A one true revolution

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me

It's easy to leave me
We should give ourselves another chance
Let go of our troubles
Into our caress
Our caress

And we set ourselves on fire
We set ourselves on fire

Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from
Wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep
Smoke wakes me from my sleep

Yeah

Speech Bubbles

We run for the hills
We run like fools
Our city is in flames
The bells ringing
The bells ringing

Devastation has come
Left in a station with a note upon
Now there's never any place
Never any place to put my feet back down
No, there's never anywhere
The scene is rolled away, lights are taken down
On a newspaper stand
Any feeble branch to put my weight upon
Well, I lie to myself
Anywhere I dare to put my feet back down

Who fell again?
In the pouring rain
Who'll find the vein
Put the needle in?
And who hears that voice?
It's like bells ringing

How will I know you?
How will I know you?
How will I know you?

Thin Thing

Down a rabbit hole
We go
As the flames grow higher
For unbelievers

Making mushrooms out of men
'Til she turns us back again

To a face of solid gold
Solid gold

Sycophantic fawners
In double quick time

The beginning at the end
'Til she turns us back again

First she'll pull your fingers off
And then she'll pull your toes
And then she'll steal the photos from your phone

But you won't notice

Our echo doesn't hear us
Anymore
Hanging on a cloth edge
By its fingers

Making mushrooms out of men
That's okay I guess
If you like this kind of, kind of thing
This kind of thin, thin, thin, thin thing
These kind of mushrooms
These kind of ripples
These kind of ripples
This kind of thin, thin, thin, thin, thin thing

Like this kind of thing
Like this kind of thin, thin thing
Like this kind of thing
Like this kind of thing
Like these kind of ripples
Like this kind of thing
Like this kind of thing

Open the Floodgates

Don't bore us
Get to the chorus
And open the floodgates
We want the good bits
Without your bullshit
And no heartaches

Someone lead me
Out the darkness
Out the darkness

It's no tricks and
No struggling
Then no one gets hurt
We absorb you
We absolve you
Throw your rubbish away

Someone lead me
Out the darkness
Out the darkness
Someone lead me
Out the darkness
Out the darkness

Free in the Knowledge

Free in the knowledge that one day this will end
Free in the knowledge that everything is change
And this was just a bad moment
We were fumbling around
But we won't get caught like that
Soldiers on our backs
We won't get caught like that

A face using fear
To try to keep control
When we get together
Well, then who knows

If this is just a bad moment
And we are fumbling around
But we won't get caught like that
Soldiers on our backs
We won't get caught like that

I talk to the face in the mirror
But he can't get through
I said, "It's time that you deliver
We see through you"

I talk to the face in the mirror
But he can't get through
Turns out we're in this together
Both me and you

A Hairdryer

Shame on you
Blue-eyed fox
Shame on you
Blowing horns
Making holes
Shame on you

Flying south (sitting on his hands)
For the sun
In a while (sitting on his hands)
Crocodile
Shame on you (plotting his way down)
Blue-eyed fox
Slipping shroud (blaming everybody else)
Way up loud
Blowing horns (plotting his way down)
Making holes
Truly seen (blaming everybody else)
Truly you
Flying south (slipping shroud)
For the sun
In a while (way up loud)
Crocodile

Gone soft now
Gone soft now
And pull me apart
Open my eyes
Open my eyes
And pull me apart

Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time to get somewhere)
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time)
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time to get somewhere)
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time)
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time to get somewhere)
Look at all the pretty lights
Look at all the pretty lights (it takes me time)

Waving a White Flag

Out of my sight
Out of my mind
Out of my sight
Out of what's coming
Out of my sight
Out of my sight
Out of my sight

Couldn't move a muscle
Couldn't get the breath in
Couldn't see the face when
Didn't wanna listen
Couldn't scratch your door down
Couldn't wave a white flag

Didn't see you come in
There has to be a way out
There's another way out
There's another way out
That's the chemicals into a singularity
Rings on his fingers
Bells on his toes, but
Didn't see it coming
Waving a white flag

Will somebody else let me down?
There's somebody's face in the moon
There's somebody else left behind

We Dont Know What Tomorrow Brings

It's a terrible shame
It's a terrible shame, I know
It's a brutal game
Gonna have to let you go
I'm stuck in a rut
Can't find my way out
And the sides are closing in

We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings

It's a terrible shame
And the grass is always green
Get it while you can
Or get sad and then get mean
I'm stuck in a rut
In a flatland drainage ditch
And I'm drowning
In irrelevance

We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know what tomorrow brings
We don't know

Skrting on the Surface

Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

When we realize, we have only to dive, then we're out of here (oh, oh, oh)
We're just skating on the surface (oh, oh, oh)
We have only to click our fingers, and we'll disappear (oh, oh, oh)
We're just skating on the surface (oh, oh, oh)

Dull eyes, trying to pull you through the ice (oh, oh, oh)
Being drawn to the ledge (oh, oh, oh)
When we realize that we are broken, nothing mends (oh, oh, oh)
We can drop under the surface, ooh

When we realize we are merely held in suspension (oh, oh, oh)
Till someone comes along and shakes us (oh, oh, oh)
As the pattern lines cross our fingers like a web (oh, oh, oh)
Do we die upon the surface? (oh, oh, oh)

Dull eyes, trying to pull you through the ice
Being drawn to a ledge (oh, oh, oh)
When we realize that we are broken, nothing mends
We can drop under the surface, ooh

Ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh

Back to: The Smile

A Light for Attracting Attention is the debut studio album by the English rock band the Smile. It was released digitally through XL Recordings on 13 May 2022, with a physical release on 17 June.

The Smile comprises the Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood with the drummer Tom Skinner. Yorke sang, and he and Greenwood played guitar, bass and keyboards. The album was produced by Radiohead's longtime producer Nigel Godrich. The artwork, inspired by old maps, was created by Yorke with the longtime Radiohead collaborator Stanley Donwood.

The Smile worked during the COVID-19 lockdowns and made their surprise debut in a performance streamed by Glastonbury Festival in May 2021. In early 2022, they released five singles and performed to an audience for the first time at three shows in London in January, which were livestreamed. They began an international tour in May. Six singles were released from the album.

A Light for Attracting Attention received acclaim and reached number five on the UK Albums Chart. It was nominated for Record of the Year at the 2023 Libera Awards. It was followed by a pair of live EPs.
