Sam Smith - Lay Me Down Lyrics

Sam Smith Lyrics

Lay Me Down Lyrics
Jump to:
Yes, I do, I believe
That one day I will be where I was
Right there, right next to you
And it's hard, the days just seem so dark
The moon, the stars are nothing without you

Your touch, your skin,
Where do I begin?
No words can explain, the way I'm missing you
Deny this emptiness, this hole that I'm inside
These tears, they tell their own story

You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, they're much too strong

Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you're alright?
I'll take care of you,
And I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight

I'm reaching out to you
Can you hear my call? (Who's to say you won't hear me?)
This hurt that I've been through
I'm missing you, missing you like crazy

You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, they're much too strong

Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you're alright?
I'll take care of you
And I don't wanna be here if I can't be with you tonight

Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side
Lay me down tonight, lay me by your side

Can I lay by your side, next to you, you
And make sure you're alright?
I'll take care of you
And I don't wanna be here if I can't be with you tonight

Lay Me Down Info:

• Sam Smith went back into the studio in January 2015 to re-record the tune for its single release. The new version of the song was done with its original producers Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice.

• Sam explained how this was the song that kick-started his music career: "Disclosure heard 'Lay Me Down,' and [after that] it was like a domino effect. We wrote Latch together, and then Naughty Boy heard 'Latch' and we wrote La La La together, and then I had a number-one single in the UK."

• The song secured Smith a record deal. London Records' Nick Raphael recalled to Billboard magazine: "I remember hearing 'Latch' and thinking, 'No person can go through that many vocal ranges at one time without going through a computer. And then he played 'Lay Me Down,' and I remember getting in the car afterward, calling the business affairs guy and saying, 'Whatever we do, we must close this deal.'"

The original music video showed Smith and his friends at a casino. Following the announcement of the re-release, it was removed. The new music video was directed by Ryan Hope and filmed in a South East London church.

Sam Smith said: "With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country."
