Name Origin:
The first high school incarnation was called "The Larry Mullen Band," for one day then "Feedback", then "The Hype" for 18 months.
Finally at the request of Steve Averill, a punk rock musician and family friend of Adam Clayton's, they picked a new name, U2. U2 is the name of a spy plane flown during the cold war by the US.

Past Members:

Formed:
formed in Dublin on Saturday, September 25th, 1976 when 14 year old Larry Mullen, Jr. posted a notice on his secondary school bulletin board

U2 Quotes:
"People say we take ourselves too seriously and I might have to plead guilty to that. But I don't take myself seriously, we don't take ourselves seriously - but we do take the music seriously."
Bono

"Yes, true, we made it hard for people to love, you couldn't put out a more mixed up record. I mean we really worked hard at that. We worked hard at messing it up for the masses and they still went out and bought it. It is an amazing feeling that the audience is kind of as hip as you are."
Bono

"We've no sponsor on this tour (Popmart), and it's not like we've taken some huge high and mighty position on this. I mean if we could get someone to give us a load of money, and not have to kiss ass, we probably would take it. But unfortunately we haven't been able to figure that out."
Bono

"Home... hard to know what it is if you've never had one
Home... I can't say where it is but I know I'm going home
That's where the hurt is"

"U2 concerts are categorically not fundraisers for any politicians. They are Rock concerts for U2 fans."
