Zoot Suit Riot Lyrics
Who's that whisperin' in the trees?
It's two sailors and they're on leave
Pipes and chains and swingin' hands
Who's your daddy? Yes I am

Fat cat came to play
Now he can't run fast enough
You'd best stay away
When the pushers come to shove

Zoot suit riot

throw back a bottle of beer
Zoot suit riot

Pull a comb through your coal black hair

Zoot suit riot

throw back a bottle of beer
Zoot suit riot

Pull a comb through your coal black hair
Blow Daddy!

A whipped up jitterbuggin' brown eyed man
A stray cat frontin' up an eight-piece band
Cut me Sammy and you'll understand
In my veins hot music ran

You got me in a sway
and I want to swing ya dove
Now you sailors know
Where your women come for love

Zoot suit riot

Throw back a bottle of beer
Zoot suit riot

Pull a comb through your coal black hair

You're in a Zoot suit riot
You're in a Zoot suit riot
You're in a Zoot suit riot

zoo zoot ziow
zoo zoot za zoo zeh
bleh abba yeeda
zeh zeh zeh
zoo zoot zi-i-i-ow
zoo zoot za zoo zeh
zeh zoo zeh zeh zoo
day day day

Oh you got me in a sway
and I want to swing ya dove
Now you sailors know
Where your women come for love

Zoot suit riot

Throw back a bottle of beer
Zoot suit riot

Pull a comb through your coal black hair

Zoot suit riot

Throw back a bottle of beer
Zoot suit riot

Pull a comb through your coal black hair

You're in a Zoot suit riot
You're in a Zoot suit riot
You're in a Zoot suit riot

(I think I'm about ready to sing it)

Zoot Suit Riot Info:

• The Zoot Suit Riots were a series of riots in 1943 during World War II that broke out in Los Angeles between Anglo American Sailors and Marines stationed in the city, and Latino youths, who were recognizable by their zoot suits.

• A zoot suit is a men's suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed, pegged trousers, and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders. During the WWII time of rationing, they were seen as extravagant and unpatriotic by some. To those who wore them, they felt marginalized by society and wearing them was a symbol of pride.

• Due to the hurried production of the album, the vocal track for the song was recorded in one take. At the end of the recording, Perry is heard saying "I think I'm about ready to sing it". They left it in as a hidden joke to themselves that they did it on the first take.

Released: October, 1997
