I Hold On Lyrics by Dierks Bentley

I Hold On Lyrics
Jump to:
[Verse 1]
It's just an old beat up truck,
Some say that I should trade up
Now that I got some jangle in my pocket.
But what they don't understand
Is it's the miles that make a man.
I wouldn't trade that thing in for a rocket.
What they don't know is my dad and me-
We drove her out to Tennessee
And she's still here and now he's gone
So I hold on.

[Verse 2]
It's just an old beat up box,
Its rusty strings across the top
It probably don't look like much to you.
But these dents and scratches in the wood,
Yeah, that's what makes it sound so good.
To me it's better than brand new.
You see this here flat top guitar,
Has had my back in a million bars
Singing every country song
So I hold on.

[Chorus:]
To the things I believe in
My faith, your love, our freedom
To the things I can count on
To keep me going strong
Yeah, I hold on, I hold on.

Like the stripes to the flag,
Like a boy to his dad
I can't change who I am, right or wrong
So I hold on.

[Verse 3]
Yeah, baby, looking at you right now,
There ain't never been no doubt
Without you I'd be nothing
So if you ever worry about
Me walking out
Yeah, let me tell you something.
I hold on.
I hold on.
Can you hear me, baby?
I hold on
Yea,
I hold on...

To the things I believe in
My faith, your love, our freedom
To the things I can count on
To keep me going strong

To the things I believe in
My faith, your love, our freedom
To the things I can count on
To keep me going strong
Yeah, I hold on...
I hold on...
I hold on and on and on and on and on.
I hold on and on and on and on and on.

I Hold On Info:

I Hold On was released in August 2013 as the second single from Dierks Bentley's seventh studio album, Riser. Bentley wrote the song with Brett James.

Dierks Bentley explained the Lyrics:
"If you asked me to sum myself up in three minutes, I'd play 'I Hold On' for you. At first listen, you might think it's about my truck or my guitar, but it's really about why I do some of the things I do and the kind of guy I am," he said."

"It's about holding on to things that mean something to me and really expressing the sentiment of, 'Trust me, I'm not going anywhere,' It incorporates some bigger imagery, and people seem to get it right away."

"The chorus is really universal…it's about faith, love and freedom…I don't think there's a country fan out there who doesn't live with those as big priorities. I hope through this song I'm able to let the fans into my heart and my mind a little more, and that they can also relate it back to themselves and their own lives."

The song was used for the GAC network's #DearAmerica campaign, where they asked viewers to write or show in pictures what they loved most about their country.

The official music video was directed by Wes Edwards and premiered October 2013. It follows a young musician balancing his climb in the music business with keeping a firm grip on the values he holds close.

"It was really important to me that this video capture the story of this song…my story. But it also needed to take on the more universal themes that the choruses cover" said Bentley.
